Spruce Glen Public School students attend the Level Up! Skilled Trades Career Fair

On October 7, Grade 7 and 8 students from Spruce Glen Public School (SGPS) participated in an engaging educational excursion to the Level Up! Skilled Trades Career Fair in Barrie, Ontario.

Organized by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development, the interactive event brought together industry leaders, trade associations, and post-secondary institutions to highlight the value and potential of rewarding careers in the skilled trades.

Throughout the day, students explored hands-on exhibits across four major sectors:

  • In construction, they investigated paths in carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, and masonry through practical demonstrations and trial tasks.
  • The manufacturing sector introduced students to precision machining, welding technology, robotics, and industrial automation.
  • In transportation, students tested equipment simulators and learned about automotive service technology, motive power systems, and heavy equipment operation.
  • Lastly, the services sector showcased specialized disciplines, such as nurse practitioners, horticulture, and technical services.

The fair provided students with invaluable direct engagement, allowing them to speak with trained professionals and industry experts about apprenticeships, training requirements, and everyday responsibilities in each field. By trying out realistic technical equipment and discovering their own personal strengths, students gained a deeper understanding of practical secondary pathways and future career opportunities across Ontario.

“Overall, the trip was a memorable and impactful experience for SGPS students,” expressed Grade 8 teacher, Kristen Higgs. “By bridging classroom learning with real-world applications, the Level Up! Career Fair sparked curiosity, broadened horizons, and inspired students as they begin considering their educational journeys and future careers.”
