This is PGPS Grade student, Gaby Castro. Most times, while living her life, she uses a wheelchair. But she did not need one when she experienced swimming in water for the first time, during her first aqua therapy swim lesson, which was held in the Canada Summit Centre pool. That’s joy in her smile. That day, she could have been smiling because of the ways she could move in the water. These days, she also may be smiling because she isn’t alone at the pool…
Yes, Gaby’s dad was with her for her first lesson. But, since then, her elementary school class has been with her, too. Her classmates have changed the day they usually go to the pool so they can be there with Gaby and the whole class can swim together at the same time. And her classmates have cheered her on.
“Gaby’s friends always light up when they see her and rush over to talk to her,” explained PGPS principal, Debbie Thompson. “For them, she represents an unconditional friend so to see their friend be able to join in on a favourite activity of theirs was so special for them.”
“The whole experience has been excellent,” said Gaby’s father. “When her classmates and best friend got in the pool and Gaby heard them, she immediately started laughing.”
